Public Art Documentary Film Series

REVIEW OF SELECTED SCREENINGS

if you happen to be catching a flight at sea-tac you might

get a glimpse at a real wonder, it's cappy thompson's

masterpiece and best known public work, it's painted glass

and it's entitled: dreaming of spirit animals

well over 100 people enjoyed the final screenings at this

university of california riverside's palm desert campus

the main film of the evening followed cappy as she traveled

to germany to make her masterpiece - virually by herself

step by step in the process, she narrated the film and

explained the dreams that turned into a dream

that turned into the reality

the next documentary featured famed american artist

jim dine, dine's work has been included, along with

hefferton, lichtenstein, goode, ruscha and walhol as being

historically important and ground-breaking by critics

the film chronicled the first ever contemporary art show

held at the getty villa on the coast in malibu, california

it included a large self-portrait surrounded by four female

figures based on greek terra cotta sculptures that can be

found in the museum’s permanent collection

dine’s poetry was written on the walls and played on a loop

so that visitors can fully capture it’s essence

finally, marfa voices detailed a genius' angst at having his

art moved from gallery to gallery like a bunch of watercolors

so in 1971, donald judd, the renowned minimalist artist

moved to marfa, texas from new york city - for some room

he made circles on the map, and what he was looking for

was the least amount of people in the largest circle

he found marfa, he rented houses for a couple of years until

he bought two large hangars, and some smaller buildings

and started to permanently install his art - inside and out

a great time was had... plus they had free cookies

- when is the next one...

those cookies were as good as the films
