REVIEW OF SELECTED AM DOCS FILM
today's screening at the
was a decade in the making and focuses on
the lives of two special brothers, they are the nelson boys
no, not david and ricky...
this wonderful documentary follows brothers
sam and luke, beginning when sam was 10 and luke was 8
luke has big problems with his big brother - he's mean
just like mine was, that's what big brothers do...
filmmaker rick stevenson's documentary: two brothers
follows these extra ordinary boys through their lives
- right into manhood and tells their story with in-depth
and tearful interviews, mixed with home movies of
them growing up playing sports, fishing, scouting, etc
as the boys grow they become closer, - then best friends
but their service to their church breaks them apart
sam goes to the mission field, while luke pursues his
dream of playing football for brigham young university
the boys cross paths again, when sam comes home
but then luke is off to do his two year mission service
the intimacy showing these young men is delightful
sam lives through the 8.8 killer earthquake in chile
as luke fights against all odds to live out his dream
it's hard to tell the story of two brothers - what they feel
and how they relate to each other and the world
but this film uses techniques that make it seem simple
this is a form of entertainment and education that the
public usually doesn't get the opportunity to experience
and this film is an extraordinary experience
